New construction of the European Football Championship stadium in Wrocław

As a specialist for the construction of huge sports complexes Max Bögl was and still is busy in a lot of countries. Since middle of January of this year also in Poland - beside Ukraine host country for the European Football Championship 2012. Poland is investing more than 25 billion euro for the extension of the infrastructure and the new construction and extension of its football stadiums – among the construction of a modern football arena for 43,000 spectators in Wroclaw (Breslau).

Max Bögl group of companies is commissioned by the city of Wroclaw for the new construction of the 160 million euro project according to the concept of the architecture office JSK situated in Düsseldorf.

Planned as a classic two-tier-stadium with a slid-in box section the structure comes up with a specialty for stadium construction. Generally the effective areas of stadiums are pushed compactly under the tribune and the tiers are accessible by external stairs. In this new European Football Championship stadium, located in the quarter Maslice, the tribunes are laid open and the effective areas as the esplanades are put outwards. The consequently arising internal generous space is serving as an access by open stairs and permits the view to the illuminated underside of the tribune structure out of prefabricated parts and in-situ concrete. A further architectonical as structural highlight is the oval roof and façade construction whose characteristic shape is giving something distinctively to the stadium and the city of Wroclaw.

Essentially the filigree steel construction consists of 38 radial aligned plane trussed girders and tangential running purlins supported by an exterior in the ground plane elliptic curved and as a three-belt trussed girder formed edge beam.

The façade also out of elliptic curved circulating ring girders is enclosing the whole stadium with a semi-transparent net membrane and seems to hover three meters over the main esplanade. All seats are covered and offer an unrestricted view to the playing field. The stadium has two circular esplanade levels with utilities, business seats, VIP lounge and premises for the teams, functionaries and media representatives. Meeting rooms and office rooms, a sports restaurant, a physiotherapy center, fitness center, a casino and a discotheque complete the offer of an integrated utilization. In the middle of 2011 the new football arena should be ready for the first matches.
